The Finnish Statistical Society
The Finnish Statistical Society, founded in 1920, is a
learned,
non-profit-making society. The purpose of the society is to promote the
development of statistical theory and its applications, and to function
as a link between statisticians and others working in different fields
of statistics and research. There are some 400 members in the Finnish
Statistical Society. They represent statisticians working in statistics
departments of Finnish universities as well as in statistical offices
and research institutes.
The Finnish Statistical Society is a member of the
International
Statistical Institute and a member of the European Courses of Advanced
Statistics. The society is also a member in the Federation of Finnish
Scientific (Learned) Societies.

Activities
The Annual Statistical Days
The society organizes the Annual Conference of
Statisticians every year.
2010
In 2010 the Statistical Days will be arranged in Helsinki.
The topic will be" Econometric Time Series Models".

In 2009 the Statistical Days were arranged at the University of Kuopio.
The topic was "Statistical Methods and Models to Assess
Global Climate Change". Keynote speaker was Prof. Phil Jones (Climatic Research Unit (CRU)
&School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia
in
Norwich) and his topic were The Global Temperature Record :
Uncertainties and its
trend in the
context of the last 1000 years.
2008
In 2008 the Statistical Days were arranged at Ilmarinen
in Helsinki.
The topic was "Effectiveness in Health Research". Keynote speakers were
Prof. Sharon-Lise
Normand (Harvard Medical School) and Prof. Anders
Foldspang (University of Aarhus).
2007
In 2007 the Statistical Days were arranged at the University of
Tampere. The topic was Monimuuttujamenetelmät.

In 2005 the Statistical Days were arranged at the University of Oulu.

In 2004 the Statistical Days were arranged at the University of
Helsinki. The topic was 'Data-analysis, Neural Networks and Statistics'.
2003
In 2003 the Statistical Days were arranged at the University of Turku.
The topic was 'Current Topics in Longitudinal Data Analysis'.

2002
In 2002 the Statistical Days were arranged at Helsinki School of
Economics and Business Administration. The topic was 'The role of the
Statistics in the Knowledge Creation in Society'.
2001
In 2001 the meeting was organised by the Finnish Statistical Society in
co-operation with the University of Vaasa in May 2001. The title of the
meeting was 'Analysis of High Frequency Financial Data'.

2000
In 2000 the conference was held in Helsinki dealing
with the topics spatial statistics methodology, small-area statistics,
geo-referenced data and GIS.
Seminars
The society organizes 3 - 4 afternoon seminars yearly on
current topics in statistics.
Seminars
The Nordic Conference of Statisticians
The Statistical Societies of Finland, Sweden, Norway,
Denmark and
Iceland organise, in rotation, The Nordic Meeting of Statisticians. The
meeting is organised in every three years. The last conference arranged
in Finland was the 23e Nordiska
Statistikermötet, was organised in Turku, Finland in August
2004 by The Finnish
Statistical Society and Statistics Finland. The next conference will be
held in Denmark in August 2010.
The Nordic Conference in Mathematical Statistics
The Statistical Society organises, in rotation, the
Nordic
Conference in Mathematical Statistics jointly with the other Nordic
associations.
The meetings are held every three years. The 23rd Nordic
Conference on Mathematical Statistics will be held in Voss (Norway) in June
2010.
Publishing
The society publishes the Yearbook of the Finnish
Statistical
Society, including papers presented at the Annual Meeting of
Statisticians and other seminars. It also publishes doctoral theses in
the Statistical Research Reports series. So far 17 dissertations have
been published. Furthermore, the Finnish Statistical Society publishes
the Scandinavian Journal of Statistics jointly with the other Nordic
statistical associations.
